Liquid Light

A Lecture in the Voice and Spirit of Neville Goddard

You have looked upon your world and called it solid. You have touched the things round about you and felt their hardness, their resistance, their fixed and unyielding nature, and you have said in your heart, “This is real; this is the way things are.” Yet I tell you that what you call solid is but a seeming. The very substance of which your world is made is not the dense, immovable matter your senses report. It is living liquid light, formless, creative, aware, and this light is your own awareness of being. You are not in the light; you are the light. You are not surrounded by it; you are it, a boundless ocean of living, pulsating, formless substance in which all things appear as crystallizations of different velocities.

This liquid light is not a thing apart from you. It is not something you must acquire or generate. It is that which you already are. Before you conceived yourself as man, before you took upon yourself this present form and these present circumstances, you were this unconditioned awareness, this formless light. And even now, while you wear the garment of flesh and move among the crystallized forms you call your world, you remain this same light. The body you see in the mirror, the room in which you sit, the problems that seem to press upon you, the desires that burn within you — all are but this one substance vibrating at different rates, assuming different appearances according to the conceptions you hold of yourself.

Consider what this means. The gold you seek, the health you long for, the love you desire, the freedom you crave — these are not separate substances existing somewhere outside this light. They are the same light, only crystallized at velocities that correspond to your present conception of yourself. When you are conscious of being poor, the light assumes the velocity and form of poverty. When you are conscious of being sick, the light takes on the frequency of illness. When you are conscious of being lonely or limited or bound, the light crystallizes into the very conditions that confirm your conception. There is no other substance. There is only this living light, and it has no choice but to express what you are aware of being.

You have been taught to believe that you must work upon the outer world, that you must manipulate conditions, push against resistance, or wait upon time and chance for things to change. But the outer world is not the cause; it is the effect. It is the crystallization of the light which you are. To struggle with the crystallized form is like trying to change the reflection in the mirror by rubbing the glass. The reflection will remain as long as the one who stands before the mirror remains unchanged. Change the light itself — that is, change what you are conscious of being — and the crystallization must change, for the light can only assume the form and velocity of the conception held within it.

This is why the prophet declared, “I AM the light of the world.” He was not speaking of a light that exists apart from man. He was speaking of the awareness of being which is man’s true identity. Your awareness of being is the light that lights every man that comes into the world. It is the initial velocity of the universe, the formless substance from which all differentiated expressions proceed. Gold and silver, iron and wood, flesh and bone, health and sickness, wealth and poverty — these are not different substances. They are the one liquid light made to vibrate at different frequencies according to the desire of the conceiver to know himself in ever new and wonderful ways.

When you look at your present world and feel stuck, when the conditions round about you seem immovable and the desires of your heart seem far off, remember that you are looking at a crystallization, not at final reality. The light which appears as these conditions is the same light that can appear as the fulfillment of your desire. It does not resist you. It does not oppose you. It simply assumes the form of whatever you feel yourself to be. The feeling of being stuck is itself a crystallization — the light vibrating at the frequency of limitation. But the moment you assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled, you change the velocity. You do not add something new to the light; you allow the light which you are to flow into a new pattern, a new frequency, and the old crystallization begins to dissolve as the new one forms.

You need not understand how this is done. The light has ways you know not of. Its ways are past finding out. You do not command the light as though it were a servant outside yourself. You simply become aware of being the thing desired, and in that awareness the light, which is your own being, crystallizes into the image and likeness of your conception. This is the true meaning of the word made flesh. The word is the conception, the idea, the desire. The flesh is the crystallization of the liquid light into form. When you assume the consciousness of the thing desired, you are not pretending or making believe. You are allowing the formless light which you are to take on the form you have conceived. The light obeys because it is you. There is no other will in the matter.

Consider the world as an ocean of this liquid light, and yourself as the consciousness moving within it. Every person you meet, every object you see, every condition you encounter is a light-being, a crystallization of this same substance, enveloped in liquid light and pulsating with the energy of its own conception. When you change your conception of yourself, you do not change the other light-beings by force. You change the relationship, the velocity at which your own light meets theirs, and the entire scene rearranges itself to reflect the new conception. This is why it is said that there is no one to change but self. The self you change is not the crystallized self you see in the mirror. The self you change is the awareness, the formless light, and as you change that, all crystallizations must follow.

Tonight, when you close your eyes and turn within, do not try to force the outer picture to change. Instead, feel yourself to be the boundless ocean of liquid light. Feel the living, formless, creative substance which you truly are. Then, within that deep, assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled. Feel yourself to be the man or woman who already possesses the desire of your heart. Do not argue with the evidence of the senses. The senses are reporting the old crystallization. They are not lying; they are simply reporting what the light has been made to vibrate as up to this moment. But as you feel the new state, the light begins to assume the new velocity. The old form grows thin. The new form crystallizes. And in a way you cannot foresee and need not understand, the outer world conforms to the inner change.

You may ask, “But how can something that seems so solid and real be changed by a mere feeling?” I tell you it is not a mere feeling. Feeling is the secret of creation because feeling is the awareness of being assuming form. When you feel yourself to be wealthy, you are not adding wealth to the light; you are allowing the light to express its infinite capacity in the form of wealth. When you feel yourself to be healthy, you are not commanding the body to heal; you are permitting the light which is your body to vibrate at the frequency of health. The body is not a thing apart from the light. It is the light crystallized at a certain velocity. Change the velocity by changing the conception, and the body must change.

This truth is not new. It is as old as consciousness itself. In the beginning, before any form appeared, there was only this formless light, aware of being. And it conceived itself in infinite ways, and every conception became a crystallization, a world, a body, a condition. You are that same light, still conceiving, still crystallizing. The only difference between your present world and the world you desire is the conception you hold of yourself. There is no lack of substance. There is no shortage of light. There is only the velocity determined by your awareness. Assume a new awareness, and the light flows into new forms with the same ease with which it now maintains the old.

Do not be discouraged if the change does not appear instantly. The old crystallization has momentum. It has been built by years of feeling yourself to be what you have been. But the light is living and responsive. It cannot resist the new conception any more than water can resist the shape of the vessel into which it is poured. As you persist in the feeling of the wish fulfilled, the momentum of the old form is overcome by the new velocity, and the world you see begins to reflect the world you feel.

You are not a victim of conditions. You are not at the mercy of a solid, hostile world. You are the liquid light itself, and the world is your own crystallization. When you know this, really know it, not as a theory but as the living truth of your being, you cease to push against the forms that seem to oppose you. You rest in the knowledge that they are but the old velocity, and you assume the new. In that assumption the light obeys, for it has no other nature than to express what you are conscious of being.

The majesty of this truth is that it leaves you free. Free from the belief that you must earn, deserve, or wait upon outer powers. Free from the struggle to change what cannot be changed from the level of the form. Free to return again and again to the formless deep of yourself and there assume the consciousness of the fulfilled desire, knowing that the light which you are will crystallize it into fact. This is the true meaning of “In Him we live and move and have our being.” You live and move and have your being in the liquid light which is your own awareness, and all things live and move and have their being in you, for you are that light.

So tonight, and every night, when the outer world seems fixed and your desires seem distant, remember what you truly are. You are not the crystallized form. You are the living, formless, creative light. You are the ocean in which all forms appear and disappear. You are the conceiver, and the world is the conceived. Assume the consciousness of the thing desired, and the light, being your own self, will assume the form. It cannot do otherwise. This is the law, and it is as certain as your own existence.

You need not announce it to the world. You need not prove it to anyone. You need only feel it in the secret place of your own awareness. For the light sees in secret, and that which it sees in secret it crystallizes openly. The old forms may linger for a little while, but they have no power to maintain themselves once the light has assumed a new velocity. They dissolve as naturally as mist before the sun, and in their place appear the forms that correspond to your new conception.

This is the great secret hidden in plain sight. The world is not what it appears to be. It is liquid light, and you are that light. Everything you have ever desired, everything you have ever longed for, everything you have ever felt was missing from your life is already contained within this light as a possible crystallization. It awaits only your assumption, your feeling, your acceptance of it as fact. When you assume it, the light does the rest. It knows how. Its ways are past finding out. It has been doing this from the foundation of the world, and it will continue to do it as long as consciousness exists.

So be at peace. The power is not in the outer arrangement. The power is in you, as you, the liquid light of awareness, assuming the form of your desire. Assume it now. Feel it now. And let the crystallization take care of itself. For it will. It must. It is the nature of the light to become what it is aware of being. And you are the light.

You are the liquid light of the world, and as you know yourself to be the fulfilled desire, the world crystallizes in your image and likeness. This is the truth that sets you free. This is the light that lights every man. This is the substance in which you live and move and have your being, now and forever.
