The Law of Thought Transmission

A Lecture in the Voice and Spirit of Neville Goddard

You have always believed that your thoughts were private. You have imagined that what you think in the secret chambers of your mind remains locked away, unseen and unheard by others. Yet the eternal truth stands before you tonight: your unspoken convictions communicate themselves. They are not hidden. They travel. They impress themselves upon the world and upon every person who enters the field of your awareness. This is the law of thought transmission, absolute and unerring.

Consciousness is the only reality. Your awareness of being is the light by which all things are made visible. When you think of another, you do not merely entertain a passing idea. You project a living force. You send forth the light of your own consciousness, modified by the convictions you hold about that person. And that light reaches its mark. It strikes the mirror of their mind and causes it to vibrate in harmony with your unspoken word. Thus your convictions are transmitted, not as words spoken aloud, but as a state of being that awakens its own likeness in the one toward whom it is directed.

Consider how perfectly this law operates. You need no physical conductor. You require no spoken voice carried upon the air. The principle is as simple and as certain as the transmission of light itself. Your mind is the mirror. Your consciousness is the light reflected upon it. When you mentally represent another in a certain state and feel the truth of that representation, you cause your mirror to vibrate. The modified light of your awareness travels instantly across any distance, impinges upon the consciousness of the other, and reproduces there the exact state you have affirmed. This is thought transmission in its pure and living operation.

You are never merely thinking about someone. You are speaking to them in the language of consciousness itself. To think is to speak low; to speak is to think aloud. Every fixed conviction you hold about another is a subjective word sent forth with power. It is alive. It is active. It will not return unto you void but will accomplish that which you have sent it to do. If you believe a man to be healthy, prosperous, or at peace, and you hold that conviction with quiet certainty, you awaken the vibratory correlate of that state within him. He will begin to express it, often without knowing why. Your unspoken word has reached him and has done its perfect work.

This transmission does not depend upon the consent or awareness of the other. The subject is like a compass needle upon its pivot, indifferent to the direction you choose to give it. Success rests entirely upon the clarity and conviction of your own assumption. When you rise in consciousness to the point where you truly believe the state you desire for another, when you mentally speak to him as though he already is that which you have seen him to be, the transmission is complete. The state is awakened within him, and he must objectify it in his world.

You may be separated by thousands of miles. Time and space are no barriers to consciousness. The imagination can transcend them effortlessly. You can dwell in the psychological space where the other already expresses the desired state. You can feel the reality of it so vividly that the distance between you vanishes. Your conviction becomes the bridge. Your unspoken word crosses every gulf and arrives at its destination with perfect accuracy. The one you think of is never far off, for he dwells in your consciousness, and consciousness is closer than breathing, nearer than hands and feet.

Yet the law is perfect in both directions. Your convictions communicate themselves not only to others but back to you as well. Whatever you believe and accept as true of another, you are also accepting as a possibility within the structure of your own being. If you hold a conviction that would be unacceptable if reversed—if you would not wish such a state for yourself—then the word you send has no soil in which to take root in the other. It returns to you, the sender, and realizes itself in your own experience. Nothing befalls you that is not of the nature of yourself. As you sow in consciousness, so shall you reap in manifestation.

This is why you must be careful what you accept as true of others. Never accept as true of another what you would not wish to be true of yourself. To believe a state of limitation, failure, or discord about anyone is to plant that same seed within your own consciousness. Your convictions are creative. They do not remain idle. They move. They impress. They shape the world around you according to their likeness. Therefore, let your unspoken words be words of life. Let your fixed attitudes of mind be attitudes of beauty, of harmony, of fulfillment. Whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, think on these things.

You change your world by changing your conception of it. You change another by changing your conception of him. You do not need to argue with him or persuade him outwardly. You need only persuade yourself. Go within. Enter the quietness of your own consciousness. Represent the other to yourself in the state you desire for him. Speak to him there in the language of feeling. Hear him confirm the truth of the new state. Feel the naturalness of it. When you emerge from this inner act, you have transmitted the word. You have sent forth the living conviction. And the law must fulfill itself.

The beauty of this law is that it operates whether you are aware of it or not. Your unspoken convictions are always communicating themselves. Every secret belief you hold about your family, your friends, your associates, your world, is being transmitted moment by moment. You are constantly impressing your assumptions upon the consciousness around you. This is why your experience so perfectly reflects what you believe. You are not at the mercy of external conditions. The conditions are at the mercy of your convictions. Change the convictions and you change the conditions. The transmission is instantaneous and infallible.

Many struggle because they believe their thoughts are powerless. They think that only their spoken words or their physical actions produce results. Yet the truth is far more majestic. Your real power lies in the silent realm of conviction. What you believe in the depths of your being is more potent than any outward effort. Your unspoken word is the true creator. It molds the plastic substance of the world into the image of your convictions. Hold fast to the pattern of healthful words. Hold fast to the pattern of prosperous words. Hold fast to the pattern of loving and harmonious words. Speak these words silently, feelingly, confidently within yourself, and they will be transmitted with power.

You are the light of your world. Your consciousness is the light reflected upon the mirror of your mind and projected into space. When you mentally see another in a new and nobler state and feel the reality of that vision, you modify the light of consciousness. That modified light carries your conviction to its mark. It vibrates the mirror of the other's mind in exact correspondence. The state you have affirmed is awakened within him. He begins to express it. And you, the sender, witness the visible embodiment of your invisible word.

This law reveals the profound unity of all consciousness. There is no separation. The kingdom of heaven is within you, and within every other as well. When you transmit a conviction of wholeness, you are not imposing something from without. You are resurrecting that which already sleeps within the other. The state you desire for him is already present in his consciousness, waiting to be awakened. Your word is the call that stirs it into activity. You do not give to another what he does not possess. You simply awaken what is already his. The damsel is not dead but sleepeth. Health is not absent but sleeping. Prosperity is not missing but sleeping. Your conviction is the voice that says, “Arise.”

Distance, as the senses know it, has no existence for the subjective mind. You can mentally live in the situation you desire as though it were already so. You can stand in the psychological space of fulfillment and feel its naturalness. In that moment, the transmission is accomplished. The conviction is sent. The light has been modified. The word has gone forth. And it shall prosper in the thing whereto it was sent.

You may ask, how then shall I live in the midst of seeming contradiction? How shall I maintain my conviction when the senses report the opposite? By remembering that consciousness is the only reality. The outer world is but the objectification of inner convictions. When you see discord, do not accept it as final. Withdraw your attention from the appearance and return in consciousness to the state you wish to transmit. Speak the word anew. Feel it anew. Transmit it anew. Your persistent conviction will eventually overcome every outward contradiction. The subjective word is living and active. It will not fail.

Every day you are transmitting your convictions to everyone around you. Your unspoken assumptions about your wife, your husband, your children, your colleagues, your nation, your world, are constantly at work. They are shaping relationships, molding events, creating the atmosphere in which you all live. If your home is not harmonious, look not outside for the cause. Look to your own convictions. What have you been silently believing about those who share your life? Change those convictions. Speak a new word in the silence. Transmit a new state. And the harmony you desire will appear.

This is not a matter of effort or strain. It is a matter of quiet, dignified acceptance. You do not force the transmission. You simply assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled and let the law operate. Your conviction does the work. Your unspoken word carries the power. You are the operator. The world and all within it are the subject. And the subject, like the compass needle, will align itself with the direction you give it through the clarity of your belief.

You are what you believe. When you believe a noble state for another, you make that state alive within yourself as well. To give is to receive. The conviction you transmit awakens its likeness first in you and then in the other. You cannot transmit what you do not possess in consciousness. Therefore, to bless another, you must first be blessed by the same conviction. To heal another, you must first feel the reality of health within yourself. To prosper another, you must first know the feeling of prosperity as your own. In this way the law is perfect. It blesses the sender and the receiver alike when the word is spoken in love and truth.

Let this truth sink deeply into your being tonight. Your unspoken convictions communicate themselves. They are the real speech of your life. They are the words you speak in the secret place, and they are heard in the outer world. They are the light you project, and they illumine the path of every person who comes within your range of awareness. Hold only those convictions you would gladly have reflected back to you. Speak only those words in the silence that you would rejoice to see embodied in your world.

You have the power to transform every relationship, every circumstance, every condition by the simple, majestic act of changing your conception of it. You need not struggle. You need not persuade with outer words. You need only persuade yourself. Enter the silence. See the other as you desire him to be. Feel the truth of it. Hear him confirm it in your imagination. Then go about your business in the quiet confidence that the word has been sent, the light has been modified, and the transmission is complete.

The results will follow as surely as day follows night. The state you have affirmed will be awakened in the one toward whom it was directed. It will objectify itself in his life and in your shared experience. Your convictions will communicate themselves, and the world will mirror back to you the beauty, the harmony, and the fulfillment you have dared to believe.

This is the law. It has always been so. It will always be so. You are the light of the world. Let your light shine through the clarity and nobility of your unspoken convictions. Speak the word in the silence. Transmit the state in the quietness of your own being. And you will see the glory of the Lord revealed in all the earth.

Your unspoken convictions communicate themselves. Know this. Live by this. Rest in this eternal truth. And every desire of your heart, for yourself and for all whom you hold in consciousness, will be fulfilled according to the word you have sent.

Tonight, in this very moment, the law is operating through you. What will you transmit? What conviction will you allow to shape your world? Choose with wisdom. Choose with love. Choose with the quiet certainty that belongs to the one who knows he is the sender, the light, and the very word of God made manifest in consciousness.

You are the light. You are the mirror. You are the transmitter. And your unspoken convictions communicate themselves perfectly, powerfully, and forever.
