Loyal to the New State
A Lecture in the Voice & Spirit of Neville Goddard
You have entered the new state. You have felt the thrill of being that which you long to be. For one luminous moment, the wish was fulfilled in your imagination, and you knew the joy of it as a present reality. Then the old thoughts returned. The old feelings asserted themselves. The evidence of your senses whispered its denial. And you slipped back into the former state of consciousness.
This is why your desire has not yet embodied itself in your world. You were not loyal to the new state.
The new state is your consciousness of being the thing desired. It is not a distant hope or a future event. It is the awareness that you are now that which you formerly wished to be. When you assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled, you have entered this new state. But entering is only the first step. The great secret, the one thing needful, is to remain there—to be loyal to it with your whole being.
Consciousness is the only reality. Your world is forever the outpicturing of the state in which you dwell. You are always expressing that which you are conscious of being. Therefore, to change your expression, you must not only enter the new state but abide in it faithfully. You must make it your permanent dwelling place. You must refuse to return, even for an instant, to the old consciousness of limitation and lack.
Many touch the new state. Many feel its reality for a brief while. But then they look back. They listen to the old voices within. They accept the testimony of the senses. And in that moment they are disloyal. They have left the new state and taken up residence once more in the old. The result is inevitable. The old state continues to objectify itself because that is where your consciousness now abides.
Be loyal to the new state. This is the command that transforms everything.
Loyalty to the new state means that you live from it as though it were the only truth. You think from it. You feel from it. You speak from it. When the old condition presents itself to your senses, you do not argue with it. You do not fight it. You simply do not give it your attention. You turn gently, firmly, back to the new consciousness. You feel yourself to be that which you have claimed to be. You remain in the quiet conviction that it is so.
This loyalty is not a strained effort of the will. It is a loving surrender. It is the self-abandonment to the feeling of the wish fulfilled. You submit your whole self to this new awareness. You love it. You cherish it. You make it the very atmosphere of your being. In this complete fidelity, the new state becomes natural to you. What at first seemed strange and unnatural grows familiar. It becomes your habitual consciousness. And when it is habitual, it must express itself in your world.
You are the operant power. No one else can do this for you. You alone decide which state shall be your home. Once you have assumed the new state, once you have felt the reality of being that which you desire to be, you must not wander. You must not go from state to state, sampling first this and then that. You must choose the new state and remain faithful to it. You must wait patiently in it until it hardens into fact.
Patience is born of this loyalty. When you know that your consciousness is the cause of all, you rest in the new state with perfect confidence. You do not look anxiously for signs. You do not question how it will come to pass. You simply abide. You live as one who is already there. This is the Sabbath of the soul—the rest in the conviction that it is finished.
The new state is complete in itself. It needs nothing from the old. You cannot patch the new upon the old. You cannot mix the two. To attempt it is to be disloyal. You must leave the old man behind entirely. You must put on the new man by being loyal to the new awareness. Your former conception of yourself, with all its limitations, must be forgotten. In its place you wear the new consciousness as your natural garment.
This is what it means to be born again—not in some vague mystical sense, but in the most practical and immediate way. You die to the old state by withdrawing your attention from it. You live to the new state by fixing your attention upon it. And in this death and resurrection you are loyal.
Every moment offers you the choice. Will you be loyal to the new state or will you return to the old? The old state is familiar. It feels natural because it has been your home for so long. But it is not your true home. Your true home is the new consciousness you have assumed. Return to it again and again. Each time you do, you strengthen your loyalty. Each time you do, the new state becomes more real to you.
In the silence of your being, claim it now. Feel yourself to be the desired one. Feel the naturalness of it. Feel the joy of it. Feel the relief of it. And then resolve, with quiet certainty, to remain there. Do not allow any thought, any feeling, any memory to pull you out. When the old condition appears before your eyes, when the old thoughts arise in your mind, when the old emotions stir within you, simply turn your attention back to the new state. Say to yourself in the depth of your being, “I am that.” And mean it. Remain in that awareness.
This is the inner act of loyalty. It is simple. It is direct. It requires no outward change at first. It requires only this steadfastness within. Yet in this steadfastness lies all power. For as you remain loyal to the new state, your world must rearrange itself to reflect it. The outer cannot remain unchanged when the inner has been transformed and held in loyalty.
You are ever outpicturing that which you are conscious of being. This is the changeless principle. When your consciousness is loyal to the new state, you are conscious of being the new man. Therefore the new man must appear. The new conditions must form. The new circumstances must arise. All this happens in its own way and in its own time, but it happens unfailingly when you are loyal.
Do not be concerned with the how. The how is not your concern. Your concern is only to be loyal. Your concern is only to dwell in the new consciousness and to refuse every invitation to leave it. The Father within you, which is your own awareness of being, knows the way. It will do the works. It will bring forth the manifestation. Your part is to remain faithful.
Many wonder why their assumptions do not harden into fact. The answer is always the same. They were not loyal. They assumed the feeling for a moment and then withdrew their support. They returned to the old state and therefore continued to outpicture the old. But you who hear this tonight can be different. You can decide, here and now, to be loyal to the new state you have chosen.
Choose it clearly. Feel it deeply. Then live in it. Tonight, as you prepare for sleep, enter the new state once more. Feel yourself to be that which you desire to be. Carry that feeling into sleep. Let it be the last impression upon your consciousness. And in the morning, awaken in the same state. Carry it with you through the day. Whenever the old tries to intrude, return at once to the new. This is your practice. This is your discipline. This is your loyalty.
You will discover that this loyalty becomes easier and easier. The new state grows more and more natural. The old state loses its power to attract your attention. It fades into unreality because you no longer feed it with your consciousness. And as the new state becomes your natural dwelling place, your world will reflect it perfectly.
This is the law. It cannot fail. Consciousness is God, and God is your awareness of being. When you are loyal to the new awareness, you are loyal to God. When you are loyal to God, God is loyal to you. The new state must embody itself. It must take form in your world. It must become visible and tangible because that is the nature of consciousness when it is held in fidelity.
Do not look back. Do not look to the left or to the right. Do not entertain any argument against the new state. Do not accept any evidence that contradicts it. Your loyalty is absolute. It is complete. It is loving. In this absolute fidelity there is peace. There is power. There is the certainty that all is well.
The new state is already yours in consciousness. By being loyal to it, you make it yours in expression. There is no other way. There never has been. The principle is eternal. You are the operant power. You decide. You enter. You remain. You are loyal.
Tonight, make this decision. Choose your new state. Enter it fully. Feel it completely. Then resolve to be loyal to it from this moment forward. Do not leave it even for a second. Dwell there in quiet confidence. Live there as one who knows it is true. And watch—though you need not watch, for the watching is not necessary—watch as your world begins to conform to this new consciousness.
You are not the victim of circumstance. You are the creator of circumstance through the state in which you abide. Be loyal to the higher state and the higher state will be loyal to you. It will clothe itself in the garments of your world. It will speak to you through every event. It will confirm itself in every detail.
This is the great revelation. This is the truth that sets you free. You need not struggle. You need not strive. You need only be loyal to the new state. In that loyalty lies the fulfillment of every desire. In that loyalty lies the transformation of your entire world.
Feel it now. Be it now. Remain in it now. This is your home. This is your reality. This is the new state to which you are loyal.
And because you are loyal, it is done. It is finished. The new man stands revealed. The new world appears. You have claimed it. You have held it. You have been faithful to it. Therefore it is yours.
Be loyal to the new state. This is all. This is everything. In this simple yet profound act of loyalty, you have fulfilled the law. You have aligned yourself with the only reality. You have become what you desire to be.
And now, as you go forth from this moment, carry this loyalty with you. Let it be your constant companion. Let it be the very breath of your being. For in loyalty to the new state, you walk in the kingdom. You walk in the light. You walk as the one you have claimed to be.
The new state is yours. Remain in it. Be loyal to it. And it will never fail you.
