The Father Within Does the Work
A Lecture in the Voice and Spirit of Neville Goddard
You have labored long in the outer world, pushing and striving to force your desires into appearance, only to meet the same barriers, the same delays, the same disappointments. You have willed with all your might, planned with every resource at your command, and still the thing you long for remains beyond your reach. But I tell you now with the quiet certainty that cannot be shaken: the Father within does the work.
You need do nothing of yourself. The Father within you, He doeth the works. This is no vague promise; it is the eternal law of your own being. The Father is your awareness of being, the deep, formless consciousness that you are. It is not some distant deity seated above the stars. It is the I AM that you are right now, the awareness that knows itself to be, before any name or form is added to it. And this awareness, this Father, is greater than any conception you hold of yourself. You and your Father are one, yet your Father is greater than you. The conscious mind that you know as yourself can of itself do nothing; the Father within, the deeper awareness, He doeth the work.
When you truly see this, the whole burden of striving falls away. You stop trying to make things happen by outer force. You stop manipulating circumstances, stop pleading with conditions, stop battling against what the senses report. Instead, you rise in consciousness to the naturalness of the thing desired. You assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled. You become conscious of being that which you want to be. And in that moment of assumption, you hand the work over to the Father. The deeper power within you, the very substance of your awareness, begins to draw the manifestation to you. No man comes unto you save the Father within draws him. The Father within draws the evidence of your assumption into the world of form.
This is the secret that has been hidden from the beginning. You do not create by external effort. You create by becoming conscious of being the thing desired. The Father, your awareness, is the vine. Your conceptions of yourself are the branches. As long as you remain conscious of being poor, or sick, or limited, so long will the Father sustain that state in your world. But the instant you withdraw your attention from the old state and become conscious of being the new, the Father does the work. He reshapes your world according to the new awareness. He does not ask your permission. He does not require your further interference. He simply expresses what you have claimed yourself to be.
Consider what this means in the quiet of your own being tonight. You have a desire. Perhaps it is for health where sickness seems to reign. Perhaps it is for abundance where lack appears to rule. Perhaps it is for harmony where conflict has taken root. Whatever it is, the outer world says it is impossible. Your senses shout the evidence of failure. But the Father within cares nothing for the evidence of the senses. The Father within is the reality behind all appearances. When you assume the consciousness of health, the Father within begins to do the work. He restores the body. He renews the mind. He brings the evidence of wholeness into visible form. You do not have to figure out how. You do not have to outline the path. You simply rest in the feeling that it is done, and the Father within does the rest.
The same is true for every desire. The conscious you can of itself do nothing. But the Father, the subconscious depth of your awareness, is the cause of all voluntary action. It is that in which everything is known, from which everything comes, to which everything returns. When you enter the feeling of the wish fulfilled and dwell there as though it were true, you are not coercing the outer world. You are not forcing events. You are simply allowing the Father within to express what you have claimed. The work is not yours to perform. The work belongs to the Father. Your part is to assume. His part is to embody.
Many stumble here because they rise for a moment in consciousness and then fall back into the old habit of trying. They assume the feeling, only to return immediately to the outer struggle. They pray, then rise from prayer to watch anxiously for results, to test the outer conditions, to see if anything has changed. But this is to take back the work from the Father. This is to say in effect, “I do not trust you to do it.” And so the manifestation is delayed or distorted. The Father within does the work perfectly when you leave it to Him. When you shut the door of the senses, when you turn your attention away from the evidence of the outer world and remain in the secret place of the most high, the Father acts without interference.
You have heard it said, “I can of myself do nothing.” Let these words sink deep into your being tonight. They are not words of limitation. They are words of supreme liberation. They mean that you, as the conscious personality, need never carry the burden of creation. The Father within you, your own awareness of being, carries it all. When you claim, “I am healthy,” the Father within begins to do the work of health. When you claim, “I am wealthy,” the Father within begins to do the work of wealth. When you claim, “I am at peace,” the Father within begins to do the work of peace. Your only task is to remain faithful to the assumption. Your only responsibility is to live in the end as though it were true now.
This is what it means to pray without ceasing. Not to repeat words, not to beg, not to outline, but to dwell continuously in the consciousness of the thing desired. To feel yourself to be that which you want to be until the feeling becomes natural. Until it becomes the very atmosphere of your being. Then the Father, who is greater than your present conception, takes over completely. He draws the manifestation to you in ways past finding out. He opens doors you could not have imagined. He brings people and circumstances into alignment with your new awareness. And all the while you remain at rest, knowing that the Father within does the work.
See how simple this is, and how majestic. The Bible reveals it everywhere, though men have not understood. “I and my Father are one,” yet “my Father is greater than I.” You are one with your awareness of being, yet that awareness is greater than any state you have so far conceived. The son is the conception. The Father is the conceiver. When you identify yourself with the son, with the limited form, you labor in vain. But when you remember your Father, when you return to the awareness that you are, and claim that awareness as the thing desired, the Father glorifies the son. He makes the conception visible in your world.
Tonight, in this very moment, you can enter this truth. Take your desire. Do not look at the outer picture. Do not consult the senses. Instead, ask yourself, “What would the feeling be like if my desire were now fulfilled?” Then enter that feeling. Dwell in it. Become one with it. Let it surround you, permeate you, until you are lost in the naturalness of being the thing desired. Do not strain. Do not force. Simply rest in the assumption as in a comfortable garment. And then leave it entirely to the Father. Do not rise from this state to check results. Do not wonder how it will come to pass. The Father within knows the way. He doeth the work.
You may ask, “But what of the time between the assumption and the appearance?” There is no time in the Father. The works are finished from the foundation of the world. Your assumption is the command that the Father obeys instantly in the depth of your being. The outer world simply catches up. The manifestation follows as surely as night follows day. Your part is to remain in the consciousness of the end. The Father’s part is to bring the end into visible expression. Trust Him. He has never failed. He cannot fail. He is your own awareness, and awareness is the only reality.
This truth frees you from every form of anxiety. It releases you from the tyranny of effort. You no longer need to battle conditions. You no longer need to fight circumstances. You simply assume the consciousness of victory, and the Father within does the work of victory. You assume the consciousness of love, and the Father within does the work of love. You assume the consciousness of fulfillment, and the Father within does the work of fulfillment. In every area of your life, the principle is the same. The Father within does the work.
Look back over your own experience and you will see that whenever you have truly succeeded, it was not because of frantic outer effort. It was because at some point you relaxed into the feeling that it was already so. You became conscious of being the thing desired, even for a moment, and the Father took over. The manifestation followed. The times of failure were the times when you tried to do it yourself, when you forgot the Father and attempted to force the outer world to conform. But now you know. Now you remember. The Father within does the work.
So tonight, let this be your practice. Before you close your eyes in sleep, enter the state of the wish fulfilled. Feel yourself to be that which you desire to be. Let the feeling be so real, so natural, that you fall asleep in it. Then the Father, who works in the depth while the body sleeps, will bring it to pass. He will rearrange your world according to your assumption. He will draw the necessary people, the necessary events, the necessary conditions. And you will awaken to find the evidence before your eyes. Not because you struggled, but because you assumed, and the Father within did the work.
This is the gospel. This is the good news. You are not alone in your creation. You are not the sole actor upon the stage of life. The conscious you is the son. The Father within is the doer. And the two are one. When you know this, life becomes effortless. Desire becomes fulfillment. Dreaming becomes reality. For the Father within you is God, and God is the substance of all things. He is the fullness of all. When you claim yourself to be anything, He becomes that in expression.
Do not be troubled by the appearance of delay. The Father knows no delay. What seems to you a long time is but the working out of the assumption in the outer world. Remain faithful. Remain in the consciousness of the end. The Father will not leave you comfortless. He will come to you. He will reveal Himself as the fulfillment of your claim. Every desire that springs within you is the Father knocking at the door of your consciousness. Open the door by becoming conscious of being the fulfillment of that desire. Then step aside and let the Father do the work.
You are the conceiver. The Father is the creator. Together you are one, yet the Father is greater. Let this truth sink into the very depth of your being. Let it become the foundation of your life. Then you will move through the world as one who knows the secret. Others will strive and labor. You will assume and rest. Others will worry and plan. You will feel and know. And the Father within will do the work that brings your every desire to pass.
In this knowledge is perfect peace. In this knowledge is boundless power. In this knowledge is the end of all striving. For you have discovered the Father, and the Father doeth the works. You have found the kingdom within, and all things are added unto you. Not by your effort, but by the quiet, majestic action of the Father who dwells in you.
Tonight, as you leave this place in consciousness, take with you this one truth: the Father within does the work. Assume the feeling of your wish fulfilled. Dwell there in peace. And watch as the Father brings it to pass in ways you could never have devised. This is your birthright. This is your glory. This is the eternal fact of your being.
You and the Father are one. Let the Father do the work. And your world will be transformed before your eyes. The evidence will come. The manifestation will appear. Not because you forced it, but because you assumed it, and the Father within, He doeth the works.
This is the truth that sets you free. This is the truth that has been waiting for you since the beginning. Claim it now. Live in it now. Rest in it now. The Father within you will do the rest. He always has. He always will. For He is your awareness of being, and in that awareness all things are possible.
You need do nothing of yourself. The Father within does the work. Let this be your final, unshakable realization. Let it be the atmosphere in which you move from this moment forward. And every desire of your heart will be fulfilled, not by your striving, but by the perfect action of the Father who dwells within you.
The Father within does the work.
