The World Is Yourself Pushed Out
A Lecture in the Voice & Spirit of Neville Goddard
You look out upon your world tonight and you see barriers, you see opposition, you see conditions that seem to mock your deepest hopes. You feel the weight of circumstances pressing upon you, and in your heart you cry out for change. You labor to alter the outer picture. You fight the shadows that confront you. But I tell you, most decidedly, the world you behold is yourself pushed out. It is your own consciousness made visible. It is the living image of that which you are conscious of being. Nothing else. There is no other cause.
Man is ever out-picturing that which he is conscious of being. This is the eternal law. Your environment and all within it reflects that which you are in consciousness. Your world in its every detail is your consciousness objectified. Waste no time trying to change the outside. Change the within, change the impression, and the outer must conform. For the world is not independent of you. It has no reality apart from your awareness of being. It is yourself pushed out.
You have been taught to see the world as something separate, something fixed, something that acts upon you from without. But the truth is far simpler and far more glorious. The truth is that the world you see is the out-picturing of your own state of consciousness. It is the mirror faithfully reflecting back to you the conception you hold of yourself. You can no more change your world by struggling with the outer image than you can change your reflection by striking the mirror. The mirror tells you who you are. Leave the mirror alone. Change the face. Leave the world alone and change your conception of yourself.
Your awareness of being is God. That awareness, that I AM, is the only reality. Everything you see, everything you touch, every condition that seems so solid and so real, is but the solidified form of your own consciousness. Man moves in a world that is nothing more nor less than his consciousness objectified. Things have no reality other than in consciousness. Therefore, when you would change your world, you do not wrestle with the things. You do not fight the conditions. You rise in consciousness to the new state. You become conscious of being that which you desire to see manifested, and the world round about you must reflect the change.
You are at this very moment drawing into your world that which you are now conscious of being. This is the truth that sets you free. You are self-imprisoned or self-freed by your own consciousness. The outer world is not the cause; it is the effect. It is the pushed-out expression of your inner state. So long as you remain conscious of being limited, conscious of being opposed, conscious of being unloved or unwell or lacking, so long will the world continue to mirror that limitation back to you. But the moment you dare to shift the within, the moment you dare to become conscious of being the very opposite, the mirror must change. It has no choice.
Consider this deeply. Your present world, with all its seeming fixity, is nothing but the objectification of your present conception of yourself. You do not see it as such because you have identified yourself with the body and with the senses. You have forgotten that the senses are but the instruments of consciousness. They report what consciousness has already established. The world round about you is not reporting something independent of you; it is reporting your own awareness of being. Therefore, to change the report, you do not argue with the senses. You do not try to force the outer picture into a new form. You withdraw your attention from the world round about you, and you enter into the silence of your own being. There, in the quiet of your own I AM, you assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled. You become conscious of being the man or woman you desire to be. You dwell in that new state until it feels natural, until it feels real, until it feels like the only reality. And then, when you open your eyes upon the world round about you, that world will have begun to rearrange itself in harmony with your new consciousness.
This is not theory. This is law. Consciousness is the only reality, and the outer world is its out-picturing. You have only to look at your own life to see the evidence. When you are conscious of being wealthy, the world reflects wealth. When you are conscious of being healthy, the world reflects health. When you are conscious of being loved and at peace, the world reflects harmony. The conditions do not create the consciousness; the consciousness creates the conditions. The world is yourself pushed out.
Now, you may say within yourself, “But the world seems so real, so stubborn, so independent.” Yes, it seems so. But its seeming reality is only the strength of your former consciousness. It is the solidified form of what you have been conscious of being for so long. Yet even now, at this very moment, you can change it. For life is forever out-picturing the new. Life is forever responsive to the new impression. You do not have to wait for tomorrow or for some future time. The change begins the instant you change the within. The instant you withdraw your attention from the old picture and place it upon the new state of consciousness, the old world begins to dissolve and the new world begins to take form.
You are the operant power. You are the cause. The world is the effect. Therefore, stop trying to change the effect by manipulating the effect. Go to the cause. Go within. Enter the holy hour of prayer by closing the door of the senses and shutting out the world round about you. In that inner chamber, in the stillness of your own awareness, declare your new I AM. Feel yourself to be the desired state. Do not merely think about it. Feel it. Let the feeling become so intense, so natural, that you are lost in the consciousness of being that which you desire to be. Then, when you return to the world of the senses, do not look back. Do not question. Do not doubt. Simply know that the world you now see is already beginning to conform to your new impression. For the world is yourself pushed out, and you have just pushed out a new self.
This principle is absolute. It knows no exception. It operates whether you know it or not. It operates whether you believe it or not. Your world is always the out-picturing of your consciousness. If your world is one of strife, it is because you are conscious of strife within. If your world is one of lack, it is because you are conscious of lack within. If your world is one of illness or limitation, it is because you are conscious of illness or limitation within. The outer picture cannot lie. It is the faithful servant of your inner state. Therefore, to change the servant, you change the master. You change the consciousness.
And how do you change the consciousness? By the simple, yet profound, act of assumption. You assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled. You do not beg for it. You do not hope for it. You do not wait for it. You become it now, in consciousness. You rise in consciousness to the naturalness of being the thing desired. You dwell there until the feeling of naturalness is established. Then the outer world, which is only the pushed-out expression of that consciousness, must conform. It has no power to do otherwise. The mirror reflects the face. Change the face, and the reflection changes instantly in principle, though the senses may take a little time to catch up. But the principle is instantaneous. The change is already accomplished in the only place it can ever be accomplished—in consciousness.
You are now, and you have always been, the center of your world. Everything radiates from you. Everything returns to you. The world is not acting upon you; you are acting upon the world through the medium of your own consciousness. When you truly understand this, a great peace descends upon you. You stop fighting shadows. You stop struggling with effects. You turn your attention inward, to the only creative power there is—your own awareness of being. And there you recreate your world by recreating yourself.
Tonight, as you sit here, you can test this truth. You need not wait. You need not go through any outer ritual. You need only to close your eyes to the world round about you for a moment and enter into the feeling of your new state. Suppose you desire harmony in your affairs. Do not look at the present discord. Withdraw your attention from it completely. In the silence of your own being, feel yourself to be surrounded by harmony. Feel yourself to be the center of peace and understanding. Dwell in that feeling until it takes on the tones of reality. Do not force it. Let it grow naturally within you. Then open your eyes. The outer world may still show some of the old picture for a little while, but persist in the new consciousness and the old picture will dissolve. The new picture will form. For the world is yourself pushed out, and you have just pushed out a new and harmonious self.
This is true for every aspect of your life. Health, wealth, relationships, fulfillment—every condition in your world is but the objectification of your consciousness. Change the consciousness and you change the condition. There is no other way. All the outer efforts in the world cannot produce a permanent change if the inner state remains the same. But a single change in consciousness will produce changes in the outer world that no amount of outer effort could ever accomplish. This is the great secret. This is the pearl of great price.
You may have noticed in your own life how conditions change when your mood changes. When you feel depressed or limited, the world seems to close in upon you. When you feel lifted and expanded, the world seems to open before you. This is not coincidence. This is the law in operation. Your mood is your consciousness in miniature. Your sustained state of consciousness is your mood made permanent. Therefore, control the state and you control the world. Be selective in your moods. Choose only those that align with the world you wish to see objectified. Dwell in them until they become natural. Then watch your world rearrange itself in perfect obedience to your new inner state.
The world is yourself pushed out. This truth liberates you from all blame, from all resentment, from all feeling of being a victim. For if the world is yourself pushed out, then you are the sole creator of your experience. No one else is to blame. No circumstance is to blame. You alone are the cause. And because you are the cause, you alone have the power to change it. This is not a burden. This is the greatest freedom imaginable. For it places the power where it has always belonged—in your own hands, or rather, in your own consciousness.
Now, you may wonder how to maintain this new consciousness when the old picture still confronts you. The answer is simple. You do not fight the old picture. You do not deny its seeming reality with your lips while accepting it with your heart. You gently withdraw your attention from it and place it upon the new state. You live in the new state as though it were already true. You walk in the consciousness of the new I AM. You speak from it. You act from it. You feel from it. And gradually, inevitably, the outer world catches up with the inner reality you have established. For the world cannot do otherwise. It is yourself pushed out.
This is the way of the mystic. This is the way of the one who has discovered the secret of creation. You do not create by struggling with matter. You create by assuming the consciousness of the thing desired. You create by becoming it in your own awareness. And when you have become it in awareness, the world objectifies it. This is the law. It has never failed. It cannot fail. For consciousness is the only reality, and the world is its faithful servant.
Tonight, as you leave this place, take with you this one great truth: the world is yourself pushed out. Carry it into your daily life. Apply it in the smallest things and in the greatest. Let it become the foundation of your every thought, your every feeling, your every action. And you will discover, to your everlasting joy, that your world is plastic. It is responsive. It is forever molding itself to your consciousness. Change the within, and the without must change. For the without is the within pushed out.
You are the Lord of your world. You have always been. You have simply forgotten. Now you remember. Now you know. Now you can consciously shape your world by consciously shaping your consciousness. The power is not outside you. The power is not in other people. The power is not in circumstances. The power is in your own awareness of being. Use it. Use it tonight. Use it every moment of every day. Assume the consciousness of the fulfilled desire. Dwell there. Live there. And watch your world transform itself into the perfect out-picturing of that new and glorious state.
The world is yourself pushed out. Let this truth sink deep into your being. Let it become your permanent conviction. Then you will walk the earth as the master that you truly are. You will no longer be the slave of circumstance. You will be the creator of circumstance. You will no longer be at the mercy of the world. The world will be at the mercy of your consciousness. For you will have discovered, once and for all, that the world is yourself pushed out.
Go now in peace. Go now in the full knowledge of your own creative power. And know that as you sleep tonight, as you enter the silence of your own being, the new consciousness you establish will already be objectifying itself in your world. For the world is yourself pushed out, and you have just pushed out a new and wonderful world.
This is the truth. This is the law. This is the way. Accept it. Live it. And your world will bear witness to the glory of your own I AM.
