Your Reaction Reveals Your State
A Lecture in the Voice and Spirit of Neville Goddard
You may believe that the circumstances of your day assail you from without, that people and events conspire against you, yet I tell you this one eternal truth: your reaction reveals your state. Every spontaneous response you make to the world around you is the unmistakable signature of the consciousness you occupy. It is not the outer drama that defines you; it is how you react to that drama that lays bare the state of being in which you dwell.
Look closely at your own life tonight. When something unexpected crosses your path—a delay, a word spoken sharply, a desire that seems denied—observe the immediate feeling that rises within you. That feeling, that instantaneous reaction, is no accident. It is the living proof of the state you are conscious of being. If resentment stirs, if fear tightens its grip, if doubt clouds your vision, you have before you the clear evidence of a state that assumes limitation, lack, or opposition. The reaction does not create the state; it reveals it. The state you occupy has already determined the form of the day, and your reaction is the mirror held up to that state so that you may see it plainly.
Consciousness is the only reality. You are forever outpicturing that which you are conscious of being. Therefore your reactions cannot lie. They flow automatically from the state you have accepted as true of yourself. When you react with irritation to a minor inconvenience, you are not merely responding to the inconvenience; you are revealing that you are conscious of being one who is at the mercy of circumstances. When you react with quiet confidence to the same inconvenience, you reveal that you are conscious of being one who moves through the world as its master. The outer event is the same, yet the reaction differs because the state differs. Your reaction is the infallible index of the consciousness you wear as your garment.
Dwell upon this for a moment. The world you see is not independent of you. It is the faithful projection of your state of consciousness. And because it is, your reaction to any part of that world is the spontaneous testimony of the state from which you view it. There is no escape from this law. You cannot pretend a reaction. You cannot force an emotion that does not belong to the state you occupy. The reaction comes unbidden, pure, and true, and it declares with absolute certainty: this is the state in which you now abide.
Consider how this operates in the smallest details of your daily life. A letter arrives with news you did not wish to hear. What rises in you first? Is it acceptance and peace, or is it a wave of disappointment and protest? That first movement of feeling reveals the state. You may quickly cover it with words or actions, yet the reaction itself has already spoken. It has told you the truth about the consciousness you are wearing. Or perhaps a friend succeeds where you have not. Does envy stir, or does genuine delight fill you? The reaction is the revelation. It does not matter what you say afterward; the immediate response has disclosed the state you occupy.
This is why so many remain stuck. They do not recognize that their repeated reactions are the very things confirming and sustaining the state they complain about. Every time you react from the state of lack, you impress that state more deeply upon your consciousness. Every time you react from the state of limitation, you give it fresh energy. The reaction is not the enemy; it is the messenger. It comes to show you exactly where you stand in consciousness. Ignore the messenger and the state remains hidden. Recognize the messenger and you stand at the threshold of transformation, for now you know the state you must leave behind.
The state you occupy is your sense of self. It is what you are conscious of being in this moment. And because consciousness is God, the state you occupy is the God you are worshipping. When your reactions are reactions of fear, you are worshipping the God of limitation. When your reactions are reactions of confidence, you are worshipping the God of abundance. There is no other God. Your reactions are the worship. They are the prayer you offer without words, the sacrifice you make without knowing it. And the world answers according to the state revealed in those reactions.
Let this sink deeply into you. You are never without a state. You are always conscious of being something, and that something is revealed in how you react to the world. The man who reacts with anger to criticism is conscious of being vulnerable. The man who reacts with understanding is conscious of being secure in his own being. The woman who reacts with anxiety to financial news is conscious of being one who lacks. The woman who reacts with quiet assurance is conscious of being one who is supplied. The reaction is the proof. It cannot be faked. It flows from the depth of your identification.
This truth is as old as the prophets, yet it is forever new because it must be realized in the present moment. The Bible is the drama of consciousness, and in that drama your reactions play the central role. When the outer world seems to challenge you, your reaction is the voice of the state you have entered. If you would know what state you occupy, cease looking at the world and look instead at your reactions. They will tell you more truthfully than any outer sign.
Observe this in the realm of relationships. Someone disappoints you. What is your first inner movement? Resentment or compassion? The answer reveals the state. You may later rationalize or forgive, but the initial reaction has already shown the consciousness you were wearing when the disappointment appeared. Or perhaps you see another receiving what you desire. Does your heart expand in joy or contract in envy? The reaction is the revelation of the state from which you are viewing that other’s good fortune. Change the state and the reaction changes of itself. But until the state changes, the reaction will continue to declare the truth of your present consciousness.
In the face of delay or apparent failure, watch your reaction. If impatience or despair arises, you are in the state that assumes time is against you and outcomes are uncertain. If calm expectancy fills you, you are in the state that knows all things are already accomplished in consciousness. The outer delay is the same; the reaction differs because the state differs. Your reaction is not caused by the delay; it is caused by the state you occupy, and it reveals that state with perfect clarity.
This principle operates without exception. There is no event so small, no circumstance so trivial, that your reaction does not reveal the state. The traffic that slows you, the weather that changes your plans, the word that is spoken in haste—each one becomes a mirror. And in that mirror you see the consciousness you are wearing. Most people look at the mirror and blame the reflection. The wise man looks at the reflection and recognizes the state that produced it. Your reaction is the reflection. It shows you the state without distortion.
Now let this realization deepen. The state you occupy is not something you visit; it is something you are. You do not enter a state and then react; you are in the state and therefore you react. The reaction is the natural, inevitable outpicturing of your present identification. When you are conscious of being healthy, your reactions to any suggestion of illness are reactions of certainty and peace. When you are conscious of being wealthy, your reactions to any suggestion of lack are reactions of abundance and gratitude. The state comes first. The reaction follows as its faithful servant. And because the reaction follows so perfectly, it serves as the clearest evidence of the state you truly occupy.
You may protest that the world forces certain reactions upon you. I tell you it does not. The world presents the drama, but the reaction is yours alone. It springs from the state you have accepted as your reality. The same event can call forth entirely different reactions in different people because they occupy different states. One man sees loss and reacts with despair; another sees the same loss and reacts with opportunity. The event did not change; the state did. Your reaction reveals your state. It always has and it always will.
Dwell upon this truth until it lives in you. Every day you are given countless opportunities to see your state revealed. Instead of resisting the revelation, welcome it. Let each reaction become a teacher. When anger rises, do not condemn the anger; see it as the voice of the state you are in. When fear appears, do not fight the fear; recognize it as the signpost pointing to the consciousness you are wearing. In this recognition lies the beginning of freedom, for now you know exactly where you stand in the kingdom of your own consciousness.
The kingdom of heaven is within you, and that kingdom is your state of consciousness. Your reactions are the citizens of that kingdom making themselves known. When the citizens are harmonious, the kingdom is at peace. When the citizens are in conflict, the kingdom reveals its unrest through your reactions. You do not change the citizens by arguing with them. You change the kingdom by changing the state, and the reactions change of themselves. But first you must see the reactions for what they are—the honest, unvarnished revelation of the state you occupy.
This seeing is itself a profound act. Most men live their entire lives without ever truly seeing their reactions. They are swept along by them, believing the reactions are forced upon them by the world. Yet the world has no power to force a reaction that does not belong to your state. The power is in the state. The reaction is merely its expression. Therefore, when you begin to observe your reactions with this understanding, you are no longer a victim of circumstance. You are a witness to consciousness. And in that witnessing, the truth of your state stands revealed.
Let us go deeper still. The state you occupy is your awareness of being. It is what you are conscious of being right now. And because you are conscious of being that, the world conforms to it. Your reactions are the confirmation that the conformity is complete. There is no gap between the state and the reaction. They are one. The state is the cause; the reaction is the effect made visible in feeling. When you feel the effect, you know the cause. When you know the cause, you stand in the presence of your own creative power. Your reaction reveals your state, and your state is the God you are being.
In the quiet of this moment, turn your attention inward. Recall a recent reaction that disturbed you. See it now not as something to be ashamed of or to overcome, but as the perfect revelation of the state you were occupying at that instant. Feel the truth of it. Let the realization settle upon you like a gentle light. You were not reacting to the outer event; you were expressing the inner state. The event was only the occasion. The state was the reality. And because the state is the reality, the reaction could not have been other than it was.
This is the majesty of the law. It is absolute, impartial, and ever faithful. It reveals your state through your reactions so that you may know yourself. You are never in doubt once you learn to read the signs. The signs are your own feelings in response to the world. They speak with the voice of truth. They do not flatter. They do not deceive. They simply declare: this is the state in which you now dwell. Accept the declaration and you stand upon solid ground. Deny the declaration and you remain lost in the illusion that the world is doing something to you.
Now let this truth expand across every area of your experience. In your work, in your home, in your finances, in your health—the principle is the same. Your reaction to any condition in any area reveals the state of consciousness you occupy regarding that area. The man who reacts with worry to a business challenge is conscious of being one who can be defeated. The man who reacts with creative expectancy is conscious of being one who is victorious. The difference is not in the challenge; it is in the state. The reaction makes the difference visible.
The same holds for relationships. Your reaction to the words or actions of another reveals the state you occupy toward that relationship. If defensiveness arises, you are in the state that assumes attack. If openness arises, you are in the state that assumes harmony. The other person is not the cause of your reaction; your state is the cause. The reaction simply reveals it. See this clearly and you will never again blame another for how you feel. You will see your own consciousness at work, revealing itself through the reactions you make.
Even in the realm of your own body, the principle holds. A sensation appears that you once interpreted as illness. What is your immediate reaction? Alarm or calm assurance? The reaction reveals the state you occupy regarding your health. The sensation itself is neutral; your consciousness gives it meaning. And the reaction is the proof of the meaning you have assigned. Change the state and the reaction changes. But the revelation comes first through the reaction itself.
You see, therefore, that there is no corner of your life untouched by this truth. Your reactions are the continuous revelation of the states you occupy. They are the daily census of your consciousness. They tell you with perfect accuracy where you stand in the inner world. And because the inner world is the only world, your reactions tell you the truth about the only reality there is.
Tonight, as you move through the remaining hours, begin to watch. Do not judge what you see. Simply observe. Let each reaction become a sacred moment of self-revelation. When peace rises in the face of apparent difficulty, rejoice that you are conscious of being the peace you desire. When unrest rises, recognize that you are conscious of being the unrest you do not desire. In either case, the reaction has done its holy work. It has revealed your state.
This revelation is not for condemnation. It is for awakening. You are the operant power. You are the one who chooses the state. But you cannot choose wisely until you know the state you are in. And you know the state you are in by the reactions you make. Therefore, honor your reactions. They are the faithful servants of your consciousness, showing you exactly what you have accepted as true.
As this understanding deepens, something majestic begins to happen within you. You become still in the presence of your own reactions. You no longer identify with them as though they were you. You see them as the outpicturing of the state you temporarily occupy. And in that seeing, a new freedom dawns. You realize that the state is not fixed. It is chosen. And the choice is always open to you. Yet the choice can only be made from the clear knowledge of the present state. And that knowledge comes through the revelation of your reactions.
Let me say it again so that it lives in you: your reaction reveals your state. This is not a theory. This is the living law of consciousness. It operates whether you know it or not. It operates whether you like it or not. It operates with the same certainty as the rising and setting of the sun. The sun does not ask your permission; neither does this law. It simply reveals. And in the revelation you are given the key to the kingdom.
The kingdom is your own consciousness. The states within it are the mansions prepared for you. You enter them by assuming them. But first you must know which mansion you presently occupy. Your reactions are the guide that shows you the door. Walk through the day with this awareness and you will never again be surprised by your own feelings. You will see them for what they are—the clear, unmistakable voice of the state you are in.
And when you see this, a quiet power begins to fill you. You no longer fight your reactions. You no longer suppress them or pretend they are not there. You let them speak, and in their speaking you hear the truth about yourself. Then, in the stillness that follows the revelation, you are free to choose anew. The choice is always yours because consciousness is yours. But the revelation must come first. And the revelation comes through your reaction.
This is the great secret that has been hidden in plain sight. Men have sought it in books, in rituals, in outer teachings, yet it has always been within them, revealed in the simplest movement of their own feeling nature. Your reaction reveals your state. Know this and you know the cause of all that appears in your world. Know this and you stand at the very center of creation.
Tonight, as you prepare for sleep, carry this truth with you. Let it echo in the silence before you close your eyes. Your reactions have been revealing your state all day long. Now, in the quiet, see them clearly. Let the revelation settle into your being. You are not the victim of your reactions; you are the witness of your states. And as the witness, you are the master.
The world will continue to present its drama. It must. But your reactions will no longer be the unconscious servants of an unknown state. They will be the conscious messengers of a state you have chosen to occupy. And when the state is chosen consciously, the reactions will confirm it with joy. The revelation will be one of harmony, of fulfillment, of peace. This is the promise. This is the law. This is the truth that sets you free.
Your reaction reveals your state. Let this one fact become the light by which you walk. In every moment it will show you where you are in consciousness. And in showing you where you are, it will open the door to where you desire to be. There is no other way. There never has been. Consciousness is the only reality, and your reactions are its voice. Hear that voice tonight. Listen to it with reverence. It speaks the truth of your being. It reveals the state you occupy. And in that revelation, the whole world is transformed.
For the state you occupy is the world you experience. Change the state and the world changes. But the change begins with the recognition that your reaction has already revealed the present state. Accept the revelation. Embrace it. Let it be the foundation upon which you now stand. From this foundation the new state will rise naturally, and your reactions will bear witness to the new consciousness you have assumed.
This is the eternal cycle. Revelation, recognition, assumption, confirmation. Your reaction begins it. Your awareness completes it. And in the completion, you discover that you were always the operant power. You were always the one choosing the state. The reactions were simply the faithful servants showing you the choice you had made. Now you choose consciously. Now the revelation becomes a song of freedom rather than a cry of limitation.
You who have listened to these words have already begun to see. The reactions of this very evening will speak to you with new clarity. They will no longer be enemies to be conquered; they will be friends revealing the truth. Welcome them. Let them show you the state. Then, in the sacred privacy of your own consciousness, assume the state you desire to be. The reactions will follow. They must. For your reaction always reveals your state.
And when it does, you will know beyond all doubt that you are the master of your world. The world is but the outpicturing of your consciousness, and your reactions are the proof of that outpicturing. See this clearly tonight. Live in the awareness of it. Let every reaction become a moment of holy recognition. In that recognition you will find the peace that passes all understanding—the peace of knowing that you are the state you occupy, and that the state you occupy is the God you are being.
Your reaction reveals your state. This is the whole truth. It is enough. It is everything. Let it live in you now, and the world you see will never again be the same. For you will see it through the eyes of one who knows the law, one who reads the signs, one who has discovered that the key to all creation lies in the simple, immediate, unmistakable revelation of your own reactions.
